10 years ago, on January 26th, 2007, my brother and I started our first business. We wanted to build a company that would allow us to exit the day-to-day within 10 years.  That was our BHAG.  That was our mission and that was where all our energy was pointed.

We started a company doing something we hated.

We ignored common wisdom when starting our new company. We started a business in an industry we knew very well, but provided a service we hated.  As a result, our motto was “follow the money” not “follow your passion.”  We were the guys who started a business they knew they were going to hate from day one.  Regardless, we built a business that made the Inc. 500|5000 list 5 years in a row.
So how did it turn out? As of this year, exactly 10 years from when we started the company, we are no longer active in the day-to-day of the business.  It produces passive income and we’ve been set free to pursue other passions.  Consequently, we are no longer tied to an industry and business we have no passion for.

What’s Your 10-Year Target? Your BHAG?

At the time we set the goal everyone thought we were crazy, thinking it would not be possible.  Yet, we focused on the ends and not the means.  It would be an understatement in saying we probably broke a few rules in growing our organization.
Starting out we had no idea how we would achieve the goal, only that no one could stop us. Not even a deep economic recession or a dying industry marketplace in the Northeast.  In 2007, exiting the day-to-day of the business was our shared BHAG.  Seems like we chose a goal that was easy to remember.  We woke up every day hating it.  Therefore, it was hard to lose sight of our BHAG.
Our new shared BHAG is to have a combined net worth of $100 Million.  It’s a crazy huge goal.  We have no idea how to get there and it doesn’t matter.  I have full confidence that we will make it, exactly like the first 10 years on this journey.
One of the discoveries we made along our path was EOS®.  It gave us the tools necessary to make our BHAG a reality. The Vision/Traction Organizer™ is the ultimate tool to organize your execution plan. Without the tools EOS provided we would still be working “in” the business and wanting to run full speed into walls everyday.  If you would like to know more about the Entrepreneurial Operating System®, schedule a 90-Minute Meeting with us.
In conclusion, we encourage you to choose a 10-year Target that scares you.  One that will make people question your sanity.  You’ll get there if you are focused on it.  If you need help we have your back.
